PlaySFMOMA

research strategy

Brief
In preparation for SFMOMA’s 3 year closure for remodelling, the museum was interested in exploring modes of public engagement outside the museum.

Overview
This resulted in the commissioning of foundational research making the case for exhibiting, commissioning, and researching artist-made games.

PlaySFMOMA is an initiative that encourages the development of avant-garde and experimental games. Through research projects, workshops, and live game events, the program explores games as a creative medium and a means of audience engagement. PlaySFMOMA provides an arena for artists working in games, and introduces museum audiences to the exciting expressive potential of this medium.

Some of the PlaySFMOMA programs include pop-up exhibitions in 2013 and 2017, an Augmented Reality Game Jam supported by Google, and multiple symposia dedicated to games and play.
